What is the Homeward Bound Program?
Redemption Through Responsibility
Homeward Bound is a 12-week reentry program for incarcerated individuals, built on the transformative bond between humans and rescue dogs. We pair participants with dogs in need of rehabilitation, guiding both through a journey of routine, training, and mutual trust.
This is more than vocational training. It’s emotional restoration, behavioral development, and a chance to give — and receive — purpose.
A Program with a Mission
Our Process
Homeward Bound follows a four-phase model designed to support personal growth, professional development, and canine rehabilitation.
The goal: prepare both the human and the dog for a successful next chapter — together or apart.

01
Selection & Intake
Each cycle begins with care:
- Behavioral screening for dogs
- Background and psychological assessment for participants
- Dog-handler matching and program orientation
We ensure safety, readiness, and the right fit for growth.
02
Build Trust & Routine
The bond begins with structure. In this phase, handlers and dogs:
- Learn daily care routines
- Practice basic obedience (sit, stay, leash walking)
- Participate in workshops on animal behavior, anger management, and emotional regulation
Progress is monitored, celebrated, and supported at every step.
03
Advance Skills & Prepare for Release
From basic training to job readiness:
- Dogs move into confidence-building and rehab work
- Participants learn intake processes, sanitation, feeding, and facility protocols
- Resume writing, professionalism, and optional canine certifications (First Aid, Handling)
The aim: skills that translate into real-world opportunities post-release.
04
Graduate & Go Forward
We don’t stop at goodbyes — we plan for what’s next.
Graduates receive:
- Completion certificates and personal evaluations
- Referrals for employment or continued training
- Continued mentorship and reentry support
- Participation in a public or recorded graduation event
When one life gets a second chance, another gets a stronger future.
